The National Defence Academy (NDA) is situated close to Pune in Khadakwasla ( Maharashtra ).It is the academy whose foundation was laid by the first prime minister to serve as a Joint Services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force train together and develop the camaraderie but essential for the national interest before they move on to separately pursue their pre-commissioning training in their respective service academies viz a viz - Indian Military Academy , Indian Naval Academy and Air Force Academy . It is note worthy that the National Defence Academy is the first tri-service academy in the world. The cradle of leadership as it is called has to its credit the reputation of being the institution to have given training to many noteworthy alumni who led and fought on behalf of the country in every major war and military operations that were undertaken since the academy was established. The alumni of the National Defence Academy has to its credit being the trainer of 3 Param Vir Chakra winners and 9 Ashoka Chakra winners in addition to many award winners for excellent services and show of exemplary bravery and leadership. The National Defence Academy is a national institute that trains selected few young men for officer level entry into the Armed forces of India. NDA is a training institution with high grade standards that trains the leaders of soldiers , the Officers of tomorrow who will be respected and emulated as standards of great leaders in the history of the nation. National Defence Academy is a well crafted way of living that transforms via the training a initially hesitant gentleman cadet into an officer reflecting honour , strength both physical and mental and a competent and polished man who is competent to handle and resolve all adverse circumstances that he as an officer later faces in addition to directing and resolving the difficulties of his troops .

The training at National Defence Academy is structured to a level that the candidate toughens up after undergoing the rigorous schedule . The cadet is served military training ( service ) for the Army, Navy & Air Force and are also strengthened in academics so as to graduate in Arts, Sciences or Computers . The parallel training is to evolve the cadet to a complete person with both efficiencies - physical and mental. The training term is of three years which is broken into six terms and when they successfully conclude the entire terms clearing all exams of every terms , the cadets are awarded their bachelor’s degree at the passing out parade . The passing out parade of the National Defence Academy is symbolic to their becoming graduate with military training , where after the cadets move to their respective service academies as per their chosen wing i.e. for the one who chose Military moves on to the Indian Military Academy as second term cadets, for the one who chose Air Force moves on the Air Force Academy Hyderabad as second term cadets and lastly for the one who chose Navy moves on to the Indian Naval Academy ,Azimalah . ( INS Zamorin) .

The National Defence Academy & Naval Academy Exam is a written entrance examination which is conducted by UPSC twice a year. The Notification issued by the Union Public Service Commission for the exam appears in Employment News and all major national dailies in the month of Dec/Jan for the April exam and in the months of May/June for the September exam. The exam is held in the months of April and September. The Exam held in April is recognised as the NDA & NA Exam ( I ) of that respective year when its held and the Exam held in September is recognised as the NDA & NA Exam ( II )of that respective year when its held . Candidates desirous to appear must apply online on the UPSC website for the examination as soon as the notification is issued / released in the paper , the application is to be filed on the UPSC website after notification is released by the Exam conducting authority the Union Public Service Commission. As per the previous history the Intake Per Course is around three hundred gentleman cadets ( Admitted twice a year) .or As is notified from time to time however the vacancies are around 195+ for Army - , the vacancies are around 65+ for Air Force Academy and around -39 cadets for the Indian Naval Academy and the vacancies are around - for the Naval Academy .
Note - Detailed Notification is issued in Employment News/ leading daily news Paper/ UPSC website in the month of Jun and Dec as Per the norms being followed by UPSC ( Union Public Service Commission.)

The various eligibility criteria set by the Exam conducting body as per the government set standards are enumerated as follows
AGE CRITERIA - The candidate must be between 16 ½ to 19 ½ yrs of age on the first day of the month in which the applied for course is due to commence from . Note - The joining month of the course is July or January thus the candidate must not be more or less than the criteria on the 2nd day of the month ( the date inclusive ).

EDUCATION CRITERIA - A. The candidate must have qualified 12th Class ( Intermediate ) of 10+2 System of Education.
B. Maths and Physics must have been subjects compulsorily for cadets desirous to join Air force & Navy.
C. Commerce & Arts students along with Science students ( PCM, PCB & PCBM ) can apply to be cadets desirous to join Army .
SEX ( GENDER ) CRITERIA- Male candidates only can apply to be cadets of National Defence Academy & Naval Academy .
NOTE - Women / Girl cannot apply for NDA & NA .
NOTE - The written Exam is conducted after approximately three months of publication of notification of examination issued by the Union Public Service Commission and the results too is declared generally after three months from the date of Exam and thus the Likely SSB Date expected is from the month of Sep to Oct ( one who appeared in the Exam ( I ) and from Jan to Apr ( one who appeared in the Exam ( II ). Thereafter after the candidate gets recommended and clears the Medical’s the merit is declared a month before the Date of Commencement of Training which is in the month of January and July for training in the National Defence Academy
Khadakwasla, Pune and Naval Academy ( INS zamorin -Azhimala,Kerala ) and after the three years, being the duration of Training at NDA , the cadet moves on for his left 1 Yr training at IMA(For Army cadets) , 3 Yrs at NDA and 1 Yr at Naval Academy( for Naval cadets and 3 Yrs at NDA and 1Yr and six months at AFA Hyderabad (For AFA cadets).


As mentioned earlier the NDA & NA is of three stages , beginning with a written Exam where when the candidate on success is qualified for the second stage which is the interview on being recommended there, goes through the third stage that is the Medicals , which is followed by the merit list after compilation of his written scores and interview scores ,.The Medicals is qualifying in nature and is not marked in numbers .
The written exam is comprised of two papers , the duration of each paper is two and a half hours and both are conducted on the same day, where the first paper tests the candidates on knowledge of mathematics , the second tests on English and General Ability. The examining body the Union Public Service Commission strictly follows the defined course which it has prescribed .
Note Paper I ...Maximum marks ..300 marks ...Subject ..Mathematics....Duration 2.5 hours ( 150 minutes ) .

UPSC NDA Mathematics Syllabus

The Mathematics section of NDA consists of 120 multiple choice objective questions. The duration of the test is 2 hours 30 minutes. The questions are from Class XI and XII level.
A. Algebra
1- Concept of a set, operations on sets
2- Venn diagrams.
3- De Morgan laws. Cartesian product, relation, equivalence relation.
4- Representation of real numbers on a line.
5- Complex numbers – basic properties, modulus, argument, cube roots of unity.
6- Binary system of numbers. Conversion of a number in decimal system to binary system and vice-versa.
7- Arithmetic, Geometric and Harmonic progressions.
8- Quadratic equations with real coefficients. Solution of linear inequations of two variables by graphs.
9- Permutation and Combination. Binomial theorem and its application.
10- Logarithms and their applications.
B. Matrices and Determinants

1- Types of matrices, operations on matrices.
2- Determinant of a matrix, basic properties of determinants.
3- Adjoint and inverse of a square matrix
4- Applications – Solution of a system of linear equations in two or three unknowns by Cramer’s rule and by matrix method.

C. Trigonometry 1- Angles and their measures in degrees and in radians.

D. Analytical Geometry of two and three dimensions

E. Differential Calculus

1- Concept of a real valued function - domain, range and graph of a function.
2- Composite functions, one to one, onto and inverse functions. Notion of limit, Standard limits - examples. Continuity of functions - examples, algebraic operations on continuous functions.
3- Derivative of function at a point, geometrical and physical interpretation of a derivative - applications.
4- Derivatives of sum, product and quotient of functions, derivative of a function with respect of another function, derivative of a composite function.
5- Second order derivatives. Increasing and decreasing functions. Application of derivatives in problems of maxima and minima.
F. Integral Calculus and Differential Equations
1- Integration as inverse of differentiation, integration by substitution and by parts, standard integrals involving algebraic expressions, trigonometric, exponential and hyperbolic functions.
2- Evaluation of definite integrals – determination of areas of plane regions bounded by curves – applications. Definition of order and degree of a differential equation, formation of a differential equation by examples.
3- General and particular solution of a differential equation, solution of first order and first degree differential equations of various types - examples. Application in problems of growth and decay.

G. Vector Algebra

1- Vectors in two and three dimensions, magnitude and direction of a vector.
2- Unit and null vectors, addition of vectors, scalar multiplication of vector, scalar product or dot product of two-vectors.
3- Vector product and cross product of two vectors. Applications-work done by a force and moment of a force, and in geometrical problems.

H. Statistics and Probability
1- Statistics: Classification of data, Frequency distribution, cumulative frequency distribution - examples.
2- Graphical representation - Histogram, Pie Chart, Frequency Polygon - examples. Measures of Central tendency - Mean, Median and Mode.
3- Variance and standard deviation - determination and comparison. Correlation and regression.
I- Probability

1- Random experiment, outcomes and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events.
2- Union and Intersection of events.
3- Complementary, elementary and composite events. Definition of probability – classical and statistical – examples.
4- Elementary theorems on probability - simple problems.
5- Conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem – simple problems.
6- Random variable as function on a sample space. Binomial distribution, examples of random experiments giving rise to Binomial distribution.
Part ‘A’ - ENGLISH (Maximum Marks 200):
The question paper of English is designed to test the candidate’s understanding of General English and use of words. The syllabus covers various aspects like: Grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and cohesion in extended text to test the candidate’s proficiency in English.

Part ‘B’ - GENERAL KNOWLEDGE ( Maximum Marks 400):
The question paper will consist of current affairs questions, questions from science, history, geography and polity.
